VMLP, CUP launch beach clean up campaign

The Vice Mayors’ League of the Philippines Pangasinan Chapter has spearheaded a beach clean up activity at the Tondaligan Beach in line with this year’s celebration of the Pistay Dayat.

The event, which was co-sponsored by the City Government of Dagupan and the Clean Up The Philippines (CUP) Movement, was participated in by the city government’s offices and government and non-government organizations.

Vice Mayor Alvin Fernandez, VMLP Pangasinan Chapter president, said the activity was meant to instill into the people’s consciousness the importance of clean surroundings.

“A clean community is a healthy community and a healthy community is a healthy people,” Fernandez said.

Also participating in the clean up activity were Mandaluyong Vice Mayor Jesse Cruz, VMLP national president, Roald Arcangel, CUP Movement chairman, and Rachelle Ong, 1998 Mutya ng Pilipinas.

In his message, Cruz lauded the participants for taking part in the activity.

Arcangel, for his part, explained that Clean Up the Philippines is an environmental campaign recognized as part of Clean Up the World.

“Clean Up the World is a global campaign held in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) that involves more than 35 million people from over 100 countries each year,” Arcangel said.

He said that his group’s flagship event is Clean Up the World Weekend, which is held every 3rdweekend of September.

“And as our participation, we are coordinating the Clean Up the Philippines Day (Sept. 17-18, 2005), where we invite organizations, groups, or individuals to register as member in the campaign and organize and conduct their own local clean up activity under the Clean Up the Philippines and CLean Up the World Banner,” Arcangel said.

After the program, Fernandez distributed garbage sacks to participants and proceeded to the beach area to pick up garbage, such as plastics, Styrofoam packs and paper.

Other organizations that participated were: Liga ng mga Barangay Federation, Pederasyon ng Sangguniang Kabataan, Women Lawyers Association of Pangasinan, Pangasinan Tri-Media Association, Dagupan Jaycees, Inc., Rotary Club of Dagupan and Rotary Club of Downtown Dagupan.
